Day 7: Tue 3 Sep - Dublin

Another 0700 h start for breakfast.  Then off to the CCD to meet up with Matthew and receive a demo on his new Pictogram program – impressive for a 16 yr old.  We then went to his presentation to the Information Section, all of whom were very impressed, especially as he is not a pharmacist.  This young man spent his summer vacation last year working for NASA and has his own company developing video games. 

After lunch, we held the MEPS Board meeting then went back to the hotel to change for the French Reception.  Sylvain and I met Jane and ZY at the CC and caught a cab from there to the French Embassy.  The reception started off very slowly and then gained momentum and turned out to be a very good evening.  At the last minute, Zheng-yu decided he would take Sylvain as his official interpreter, however, his name was not on the list of guests.  So, Jane and I were allowed to enter, and although ZY was allowed, he chose to wait outside with Sylvain until help arrived.  When the French General arrived, things started happening and after profuse apologies, Sylvain was accepted.  One of the speeches went on for a bit too long and as it was all in French, neither ZY, Jane nor I understood a word.  It was also quite warm in the room and many nearly passed out, including Jane.  After the speeches, it was time to mingle and chat whilst enjoying some great French wine.  Dominique Jordan joined us and we had a great chat about nothing in particular, and very soon, they were asking us to leave.  We caught a cab back to the CC and then the tram to the hotel.  Home by 2315 I think.

Day 5: Sun 1 Sep - Dublin

This morning, we met for a late breakfast – 0800 h and then had a mini meeting to discuss the next couple of days and how we are going to run things.  Also discussed the photobook and got some good feedback.  Then, at 1230 h Jane and I attended, with Zheng-yu, an FIP First-Timers meeting where all the newbies get to meet the important people of each section. From there we went to the Opening Ceremony which was actually better this year than it has been in a while; the speeches didn’t go on for too long and the entertainment was great; titled Rhythm and Dance, three musicians teamed with an Irish traditional dancer and an American tap dance to produce a specially choreographed piece combining Irish sounds with an international jazz flavour. After the OC we went to the exhibition (free pens!); the posters were on a separate floor away from the masses which defeated the purpose of having to man then as we didn’t get too many people visiting to ask about MEPS. Day 3: Fri 30 Aug - Dublin

Was up quite early and after having breakfast Jane and I went exploring.   We bought an unlimited travel 7 day tram ticket (23.80 Euro) and took the tram into the CCD (Convention Centre) which took about 40 mins.   We then walked back to try find phone shop to buy a local sim.   Eventually found a Three shop and bought a 20 Euro “all-you-can-use” data pack – unlimited everything (local) for 30 days - bargain! It was then back to the hotel to meet up with Sylvain.  There was a McDonalds restaurant adjacent the tram stop so we had lunch there and then went back into city to check out half day tours.  We eventually chose one that went to Malahide Castle and did a coastal tour on the way back where we visited the fishing village of Howth and Howth Summit.  Whilst the sights and views were great, the Tour guide needed a bit of work (GrayLine company).  Timings were all off and very rushed in places where we should have had more time. Day 1: Wed 28 Aug - Hervey bay to Brisbane to Dubai

Greg drove me into the Hervey Bay airport and left me to do my own thing.  I find it easier to say goodbye before checking in.  We left HVB on time at 1800h bound for Brisbane. Once in BNE, I made my way over to the international airport and went through all the necessary and obligatory controls.  Did a bit of window shopping in the duty free shops and then found the QC and had some dinner and a glass or two of lovely white wine. The flight for Dubai left on time at 2100 h.  I had pre-selected my own seat and had a good one except for the rude, non-Australian male sitting next to me.  Anyway, I gave as good as he gave me and eventually, he decided to go to sleep and didn’t bother me after a while.  As I was a Gold FF, the staff were very attentive, much to the amazement of all the other travellers.
